I (32F) ended up talking to the police today because some of my neighbors complained about me swimming topless.
For some context, I live in rural Manitoba, Canada. I don’t live directly on a lake, but there’s a public beach nearby with a small boat launch and a sandy area where people swim.
I love swimming, and if I’m being honest, I’d rather skinny dip.
The problem is that it’s a public beach, so I don’t feel comfortable being completely naked. Instead, I just swim topless.
I also understand that not everyone wants their kids seeing a random woman’s breasts, even though it’s perfectly legal for women to be topless in public here in Canada.
Because of that, I almost always go at night when the beach is basically empty.
There aren’t any posted operating hours, so I’m not breaking any rules by being there after dark.
A few nights ago, I was doing exactly that when I noticed a group of teenagers riding their bikes along the road beside the beach.
I didn’t think much of it at the time.
Apparently one of them told their parents, or someone else saw me, because today the police showed up at my house.
Honestly, the officers seemed like they knew it was a pretty silly complaint, but they still asked if I’d consider not swimming topless anymore.
I told them I’d think about it.
They wished me a good day and left.
Now I’m wondering if I’m actually in the wrong.
I know it’s not something you see every day, especially in a small town, but I’m not breaking the law, I’m not bothering anyone on purpose, and I specifically go at night because I know most people won’t be there.
Part of me is even tempted to go sunbathe topless now out of pure spite, although I know that’s probably not the most mature response.
So… AITAH?
