Throw away because this is already causing drama in my family.
I (29F) lost my fiancé (31M) in an accident about a year ago. We were together for 6 years and engaged for 8 months before he passed. It completely destroyed me, and I’m still not okay, but I’ve been trying to move forward slowly.
The engagement ring obviously means everything to me. I still wear it sometimes — not on my ring finger anymore, but on a chain around my neck.
My younger sister (26F) got engaged last month. I was genuinely happy for her at first, but things got weird pretty quickly. Her fiancé apparently couldn’t afford the kind of ring she wanted, and she started making comments like, “you already had your moment” and “it’s just sitting there doing nothing.”
I thought she was joking.
She wasn’t.
A few days ago, I went over to her apartment for dinner. At some point, I noticed she kept glancing at my necklace, but I didn’t think much of it.
Later that night when I got home, I realized the ring was gone.
I panicked and called her immediately. She casually said, “Oh yeah, I took it. I figured you’d understand. It should be used instead of wasted.”
I honestly saw red.
I drove back over there and demanded it back. She tried to argue that I was being “selfish” and that I should “let something good come out of a tragedy.” Her fiancé looked incredibly uncomfortable but didn’t say anything.
We ended up screaming at each other. I told her if she didn’t give it back, I’d call the police.
She finally threw it at me and told me not to come to her wedding.
Now my parents are involved, saying I should “keep the peace” and apologize because she’s “under stress” from wedding planning. Some relatives are even saying I’m holding onto the past in an unhealthy way.
I feel like I’m going insane.
This ring is one of the only things I have left of him.
But now I’m being painted as the villain for “ruining her engagement.”
