AITA for reporting my own apartment building… after I realized my neighbors might all be paying rent for rooms that don’t actually exist?

I (28F) moved into a new apartment complex three months ago.

It was cheap for the area. Suspiciously cheap, but I didn’t question it.

New job, tight budget, needed a quick place.

Everything seemed normal at first.

Clean hallways. Quiet neighbors. Secure entry.

But there was one thing I couldn’t ignore.

The floor plan.

My unit felt… smaller than advertised.

Not by much.

But enough that I noticed the layout didn’t quite match the blueprint I was given during leasing.

I asked the building manager about it.

He laughed and said, “Old construction quirks. Don’t overthink it.”

So I didn’t.

Until I met my neighbor from Unit 3B.

She told me something strange.

“I can hear someone walking above me at night. But I’m on the top floor.”

I thought she was joking.

Until I checked.

There is no floor above hers.

Just roof access.

That should’ve ended it.

But it didn’t.

Because the next night, I heard it too.

Footsteps.

Right above my ceiling.

Slow. Heavy. Deliberate.

I knocked on the ceiling jokingly.

The footsteps stopped.

Then continued… in a different direction.

Like someone had moved.

So I started paying attention.

And that’s when I noticed something worse.

People in my building don’t overlap.

Ever.

I’ve never seen two neighbors leave their apartments at the same time from adjacent units.

Never.

Always staggered.

Always isolated.

Then last week, I met a man from “2C.”

Except…

2C doesn’t exist on the directory.

I checked.

His name wasn’t listed.

When I asked the front desk, they said:

“We don’t have a 2C.”

But I just spoke to him.

That night, I decided to test something.

I stayed in the hallway after midnight.

Lights dimmed.

Quiet.

And I watched.

Around 12:47AM, I saw movement behind apartment doors.

Not people leaving.

Just doors unlocking… then locking again.

One by one.

Like someone was checking them.

Or counting them.

Then I heard something over the intercom.

A soft voice saying:

“Occupancy confirmed.”

I froze.

AITA for reporting my own apartment building… after I realized my neighbors might all be paying rent for rooms that don’t actually exist?

Because it wasn’t coming from the lobby.

It was coming from inside the walls.

The next morning, I went to request my lease documents again.

The receptionist looked confused.

She typed for a while.

Then said:

“You’re listed under Building B.”

I said, “There is no Building B.”

She smiled without looking at me and replied:

“Exactly.”

Now here’s the part I can’t explain.

Last night, I got a notice slipped under my door.

It was a rent increase.

But the unit number wasn’t mine.

It said:

“Unit 4D – Adjustment Notice (Current Occupant: Pending)”

I don’t live in 4D.

I don’t even think 4D exists.

But this morning…

I heard footsteps above me again.

And they sounded like they stopped… directly over my bed.

So AITA for reporting this to housing authorities…

or did I just make myself visible to something that wasn’t supposed to notice me?
